Bitdeer Breaks Ground On Alberta Data Centre

Newsdesk, June 3, 2026

Bitdeer has broken ground on a new energy and digital infrastructure facility near Fox Creek, Alberta, marking the start of construction on a vertically integrated project that pairs on-site power generation with high-performance computing capacity.

The Singapore-headquartered company said the $214 million project will include a 101-megawatt natural gas power plant and a data centre offering approximately 100 megawatts of computing capacity.

The facility is expected to be energized in the second quarter of 2027.

Bitdeer, which trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol BTDR, describes itself as a technology company focused on artificial intelligence and Bitcoin mining infrastructure. The Fox Creek project is designed to support Bitcoin mining from the outset while retaining flexibility for future high-performance computing workloads, including AI applications.

“Today’s groundbreaking marks the beginning of our long-term presence in Canada,” said Jihan Wu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bitdeer. “We chose Alberta — and Fox Creek in particular — because it is one of the few places in the world that combines regulatory confidence, openness to industrial investment, energy resources, and a skilled workforce that projects like ours require.”

The project is being built on a 7.7-hectare site approximately 1.5 kilometres from the Town of Fox Creek in the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16. Bitdeer said the site was originally developed by Kiwetinohk Energy Corp. and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission before Bitdeer acquired the fully licensed and permitted project in February 2025.

The facility will operate under Alberta’s bring-your-own-generation framework, with the data centre powered directly by the on-site natural gas plant rather than drawing operating electricity from the provincial grid.

According to Bitdeer, the behind-the-fence configuration is intended to reduce transmission losses, improve power utilization, and support long-term scalability and resilience. The plant will remain connected to Alberta’s electricity system through an approved 99-megawatt interconnection with the Alberta Electric System Operator, giving the facility the ability to curtail computing workloads and contribute electricity back to the grid during periods of peak demand or grid stress.

The company said the project is expected to create 300 construction jobs and 30 permanent positions, with priority placed on Alberta-based contractors and local hiring for operational roles.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said the project aligns with the province’s ambitions to become a destination for AI data centre investment.

“Alberta’s government is committed to positioning our province as the place to invest and build AI data centres,” said Smith. “Abundant natural gas supply and world-class power industry capacity make this an attractive and competitive destination for this emerging sector, and our province is home to a thriving AI ecosystem with world-class research and talent.”

Dale Nally, Alberta’s Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, called the project “a signal example” of the kind of investment the province’s regulatory environment is designed to attract.

“By providing operational flexibility within our deregulated electricity market, we are giving global investors the confidence to build the digital infrastructure of the future right here in Alberta,” said Nally.

Bitdeer said the Fox Creek facility will use a closed-loop dry-cooling system with no water withdrawal from nearby bodies of water. The company also said it plans to deploy a system to capture and utilize carbon dioxide emissions from on-site power generation, with the goal of reducing the facility’s overall carbon intensity and offsetting applicable carbon obligations under Canadian regulations.

The company said the project follows years of permitting, engineering, environmental review, regulatory approvals, and consultation with local governments and First Nations.

David Billay, Bitdeer’s Manager of Alberta Projects, said the facility will make Fox Creek part of Northern Alberta’s next generation of digital infrastructure.

“I look forward to working closely with the people of this community throughout the life of the project, with local hiring and procurement opportunities and honest, open communication at every stage,” said Billay. “We are here for the long term, and we are proud to be partners in Fox Creek’s progress.”

The groundbreaking comes as Alberta works to position itself as a destination for large-scale data centre and AI infrastructure development, leveraging its natural gas resources, deregulated electricity market, and growing interest from global digital infrastructure investors.
