Canada’s data centre sector is emerging as a bright spot in a subdued technology job market.
Data centre job postings increased 68% between January 2025 and August 2026, according to new research from Indeed Hiring Lab. Other tech postings rose just 8% over the same period.
By August, data centre postings stood 36% above pre-pandemic levels, while other tech postings remained 23% below them.
The growth extends beyond recruitment activity. Statistics Canada figures cited by Indeed show payroll employment in the subsector most closely associated with data centres climbed 22.8% over the past year, adding roughly 8,000 workers.
However, Indeed cautions against attributing all that momentum to artificial intelligence. Much of today’s demand reflects existing storage facilities and cloud migration, with Canada’s AI infrastructure expansion still developing.
Advertised compensation also stands out. Data centre management roles offered a 28% premium over comparable positions elsewhere, while IT infrastructure operations and support roles advertised 25% more.
Indeed sees room for further growth as proposed facilities advance, particularly in Alberta. The scale of that opportunity will depend on projects securing power and clearing permitting hurdles.
