Bell Canada is dramatically expanding its planned AI infrastructure footprint in Saskatchewan, creating a pathway to what could become a 1.2-gigawatt data centre hub.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Bell CEO Mirko Bibic announced the agreement Monday in Toronto, closing out the first day of the Canada Investment Summit.
Under a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the Saskatchewan government, Bell plans to develop up to 900 megawatts of additional capacity in phases. The expansion would quadruple the 300-megawatt Bell AI Fabric campus announced earlier this year for the Rural Municipality of Sherwood, outside Regina.
At full buildout, the data centre infrastructure, computing equipment and related power generation could represent more than $50 billion in capital investment—making it the largest investment project in Saskatchewan’s history.
“This historic investment will create thousands of good jobs and new opportunities for Saskatchewan people,” Moe stated. “It will also strengthen Canadian data sovereignty by keeping Canadian data here at home, stored by a Canadian company and protected under Canadian rules.”
Bell AI Fabric will also establish the head office of its national AI infrastructure ecosystem in Saskatchewan.
The additional capacity is expected to be powered by partner-developed natural gas generation rather than the provincial grid. Bell says the proposed facilities would use closed-loop cooling technology that requires no municipal water.
The project could support between 800 and 1,200 construction, engineering and technical jobs, alongside up to 600 permanent operations and management positions. Bell estimates that as many as 3,000 additional community and off-site jobs could follow.
Development will depend on customer commitments and remain subject to commercial agreements, permits, regulatory approvals and environmental assessments.
