SLB is establishing a Canadian facility to assemble and test critical data centre infrastructure, adding a domestic manufacturing component to Meta’s expanding investment in Canada.
Formerly known as Schlumberger, SLB is a global energy technology and oilfield services company that is expanding into data centre infrastructure, applying its engineering and manufacturing expertise to modular facilities, cooling systems and related equipment.
Disclosed in the company’s third-quarter results, the Canadian facility is expected to open in the first half of 2027. It will support SLB’s role as Meta’s delivery partner for modular offsite assembly, installation and commissioning services.
SLB did not disclose the facility’s location, investment value or anticipated staffing in the announcement.
The development builds on Meta’s previously announced $13-billion-plus data centre in Sturgeon County, Alberta. As DataCentre.ca reported in July, the campus will be Meta’s first Canadian data centre and ranks among the country’s largest announced digital infrastructure investments.
Meta expects approximately 3,000 skilled trade workers onsite at peak construction and roughly 300 operational jobs once its campus is completed. Those projections relate to Meta’s development, rather than the new SLB facility.
For SLB, the Canadian expansion comes as data centre infrastructure becomes a growing business alongside its established energy operations. Its Data Center Solutions unit generated US$230 million in third-quarter revenue, up 23 per cent from the previous quarter and 76 per cent year over year.
The planned facility points to a broader opportunity for Canada’s data centre sector: attracting the manufacturing and infrastructure services needed to deliver large computing campuses, alongside investment in the campuses themselves.
